
Let’s Talk About Putting Infrared Heat in Your Bathroom
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam everywhere and the constant risk of a stray splash of water. You can’t just throw a standard heater in there and hope for the best. To actually keep things safe, you have to be obsessive about two things: the materials you use and how tight the seals are.
Dealing with the Damp
Here’s the thing about humid air: it loves to create a path for electricity to travel where it shouldn’t—like from a live wire straight into the metal frame. To stop that, we use IP65-rated enclosures (or even higher). Basically, these are housings that lock out vapor. Inside, the heating element sits in high-purity quartz glass. Quartz is great because it’s a natural insulator that keeps the tungsten filament tucked away from the world. But don’t cut corners here. If you use cheap glass, one cold splash from a shower can crack the tube. Once that happens, your insulation is gone and you’re looking at a short circuit. Not a great way to start your morning.
The “Danger Zones”
The scariest part of the setup is where the wires actually meet the lamp. That’s where things usually go wrong. We use ceramic or high-temp silicone insulators at those connection points to stop any current from leaking out. And please, for the love of everything, make sure these are wired into an RCD or GFCI. It’s your safety net. If a seal fails and water hits the circuit, the power cuts out in a blink. It’s the difference between a tripped breaker and a disaster.
The Trade-off
There’s a catch, though. When you seal a heater tight enough to keep water out, you’re also trapping the heat inside. Since there’s less airflow, the internals get way hotter than they would in a living room. This means your wiring has to be up to the task. I always suggest Teflon or silicone-jacketed cables. Standard PVC? Forget about it. It’ll melt and peel away, leaving bare copper exposed. Stick with high-temp leads and you can actually relax while you’re warming up.
